the river slows to watch our ritual

a head or husk to sacrifice calm the river gods

shadow on the sidewalk inhales deeply from cigarette and holds the silence for eternity

a cold gust snaps the spine and bends morale

piecing the snippets of this morning’s ginko

warm air watching bodies unravel

shadow looms under the dirty river surface
