tired eyes the moon phases between blinks

wings spread the pigeon carcass refuses to fly
the pyre still burns long after we’re gone
the kingfisher looks into our concrete cave with pity
i was reminded of a time when this body of mine was but a tool for overlords
somewhere above us a man vomits a child cries but the rain always sings
raises its voice over the rain kingfisher at dawn
a selfie as the poison spreads down river into the seas
over the parapet the river thick with death
the rain at dusk deals its darkest hand yet
