the slow crawl of daylight through the grey
birdsong withers in the morning winds
this obsession with light has scarred the night
off to spread a rumour the spider becomes two
cat leashed to the gate its shadow strolls the cold corridor
the silent swarm of swallows a feast before the storm
the solemn landscape’s grey greetings
waking to the winter spider on the first day of the year
lips break into a song to ease this emptinesss
